January Update

Well, obviously none of my New Year's Resolutions were to be a better blogger! I don't know where the time went, but here we are almost into February and no sewing updates!

I HAVE been sewing of course, but no really big projects. I'm working on some patchwork baby quilts for two of my mother's friends (pictures to come later), and then I made some cute little fabric softboxes to keep miscellaneous things that seem to gather on our living room end tables, and I've been puttering around with my bag of selvedge scraps.

Every time I cut into fabric, I trim off the selvedge and throw it into a bag. The bag has gotten pretty full, so I knew it was time to do something with them. A spool block came to mind, and I thought the selvedge pieces would work well with that sort of block. I started by sewing them into large chunks, then trimmed them down and added the blue fabric on the sides, and the angled pieces on top to make the top of the spools.

I played around with layout for awhile, and finally decided to just place them side by side in rows. That ended up being kind of boring, so I took the leftover trimmings and made thing strips of selvedge edges for rows to go in between the spools. These remind me of film strips, and I think I like them even better than the spools!

Usually my scrappy projects come together in an organic way without a bunch of planning, often with mixed results. I'm not completely in love with this one, but it's acceptable. I decided to keep this to a smaller lap-sized quilt and use the rest of the selvedges for something else later - I still have a ton!
